The first alpacas brought to the United States were imported in 1984. Today in the US there are over 100,000 registered alpacas in the Alpaca Registry, Inc, which keeps records of registration and documents bloodlines through blood typing. The Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (AOBA) is the national organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the alpaca industry.
